Appeal is a text weight revival serif-based font based on the characters used in David Walker’s Appeal in Four Articles to the Coloured Citizens of the World. Published in 1830, this document was a manifesto to challenge the conditions of humanity that Americans of color faced during those times. This charged writing featured typesetting that was meant to excite and incite as it was read through the use of spacings and punctuations, a real feat at the time for its intended audience. The original publishing was produced at a finished size of 6×9 inches for portability. At 87 pages, the printing featured a 7pt font size. It is likely that the booklet was printed in the same shop as Boston’s Freedom’s Journal, the first Black newspaper in the U.S., where Walker was a writer.
